Bonfoey Gallery Presents Bonfoey’s 130th Anniversary Exhibition
The Bonfoey Gallery has endured and served the Cleveland community for more than a century. To celebrate our longevity, we are pleased to present our 130th anniversary exhibition on October 6th running through January 8th, 2023. This exhibition will be a retrospective of Cleveland artists who have shown with Bonfoey’s over its 130 year history. Artists such as Dana Oldfather, Laurence Channing, Chris Pekoc, Clara Deike, Abel Warshawsky, Viktor Schreckengost, Julian Stanczak, Joseph O’Sickey and others will be highlighted.
In its 130 years of service, the Bonfoey Gallery has had only three owners. The original owner, Asher Bonfoey, ran the gallery from its inception in 1893 until his retirement in 1939. During its early years, the gallery saw both success and hardship, working with clients such as Henry Ford and John D. Rockefeller while also battling events such as the Great Depression. George Moore took over in 1939 and expanded the clientele base from private citizens to include more corporate clients. He then began hiring sales representatives, selling artwork from European dealers, and purchasing the company’s first delivery vehicle. When current owner, Richard Moore, took over in 1971 he initiated a new direction for the gallery by inviting Cleveland watercolorist, Richard Treaster, to exhibit his work. Bonfoey’s became known as one of the first galleries to “present and promote Cleveland artists ”.
Today, the Bonfoey Gallery is one of the oldest art galleries in the country, actually predating the Cleveland Museum of Art. The gallery is a member of Cleveland’s 100 Year Club of businesses, along with other long-standing companies such as Sherwin-Williams and The Plain Dealer. True to its roots, the gallery offers the finest custom framing in the area, along with a variety of other services including appraisals, restoration, art consultation and installation. Under the leadership of co-gallery directors, Marcia Hall and Diane Schaffstein, the gallery continues to represent the quality works of the area’s finest regional artists.
